David Boucher and Matthew Kaplan have a yin/yang type of partnership. When Matthew launched Solex, a payroll services company, David was working in the employee benefits and 401(k) space. The two met over coffee to discuss one of David’s clients and became fast friends. Over the years, they started referring clients to each other and eventually became business partners. Today, Solex continues to grow under Matthew and David’s leadership. Matthew is the systems and compliance ninja dealing with the technical side of the business and David is the relationship manager helping clients to navigate challenges and to bring support to internal team members.

SMALL BUSINESS CHALLENGE
“One of our goals was to elevate Solex to a consulting business in the payroll industry versus a transactional big box solution,”

Matthew and David explained. “We wanted to forge real relationships with our clients, help them with their challenges, and be there when they needed us. That’s similar to one of the things we found lacking with the bank we were doing business with at the time. One day, we received a letter letting us know they were selling the bank to another bank. Rather than just go with a bank that we did not seek out, we decided to reach out to different banks and conduct an RFP. We wanted to be able to make an informed decision as to who would be the best partner.

THE NORTHERN BANK SOLUTION
“We did a Request for Proposal (RFP) and sent it out to a few banks,”

Matthew and David continued. “We were looking for a mid-level, regional sized bank, not a large bank. A couple of the banks we spoke with had an arrogance about them, as if we’d be lucky to work with them. One thing we noticed immediately was that Northern Bank took a different approach, a more human approach than the other banks. They seemed to be very relationship focused and very real and genuine. We met with the CEO and the executive team and they didn’t make us feel like a small fish in a big pond, instead we felt like a very important potential client to them.”

“We were looking for a unique, multi-layered approach to cash management for our payroll business. Northern Bank understood what we were talking about and what we needed and they were able to put together an action plan that gave us confidence.”

A GROWING PARTNERSHIP

“We’ve onboarded some unique new clients that have allowed us to grow and push ourselves to be more dynamic,”

Dave explained. “Those situations have required Northern Bank to be flexible with timelines and solutions and turn things around quickly. "We’ve never been in a situation where we’ve had to say, ‘no’, to a client, because Northern Bank works with us to get us what we need when we need it," Matthew shared. We know we can always pick up the phone and have a conversation and get answers to our questions and that’s what a true partnership is," said Matthew.

“And I’m happy to say that our partnership keeps growing,” David continued. “When Northern Bank was looking to form a payroll services partnership, they reached out to Matthew and were invited to present our services to them. They were impressed with what our company brought to the table and how we’re different than our competitors. We kicked off that new partnership in June of 2025.”
