Northern Bank Charitable Foundation is pleased to award Ryan Jefferson the 2018 McGarry Scholarship
WOBURN, MA, AUGUST 1, 2018 – The Northern Bank Charitable Foundation
awarded the 2018 James E. McGarry, Jr. scholarship to Ryan Jefferson.
This scholarship, established in 2014, honors the late “Jim” McGarry of
Woburn for his 50 years of service to Northern Bank. It also pays
tribute to his lifelong affinity for the fire and police departments in
his city. The $5,000.00 scholarship was open to graduating high school
seniors with a parent or natural guardian who is an active firefighter
or police officer in one of the communities directly served by the Bank.
Ryan Jefferson is the son of Gwen and Robert Jefferson, from
Arlington, MA. He is a 2018 graduate of Matignon High School with plans
to attend UMass Amherst in the fall to study business. While at
Matignon, Ryan played Varsity Hockey, Soccer, and Lacrosse, where he was
co-captain, and participated in the Debate and Mock Trial Teams. Ryan
was a member of the National Honor Society since his sophomore year. In
addition to his strong academic achievements and extracurricular
activities, Ryan made time to give back to others, which he credits to
his father, Robert, an Arlington firefighter. He not only volunteered
locally at the Arlington Senior Center and with the Helping Hands
Foundation, but also with the Catholic Heart Work Camp, doing out of
state service during his vacations. Ryan has demonstrated his commitment
to helping others and making the world a better place.
Since our founding in 1960, Northern Bank has maintained the firm
belief that a strong bank, invested in the towns we serve, financially
strengthens local communities. In addition to the many hours our team
members dedicate to organizations in our communities, Northern invests
through the Northern Bank Charitable Foundation. Created in 2012, the
Northern Bank Charitable Foundation provides financial support to
non-profits and other community organizations that promote educational
opportunities, youth, and social services or community development. In
2017, the Northern Bank Charitable Foundation provided contributions
ranging from $250 to $50,000 to more than 35 local organizations.
