In honor of Juneteenth National Independence Day, Northern Bank branches and the Contact Center will be closed on Friday, June 19. As always, mobile banking, online banking and our ATM network are available to you 24/7.

Due to construction, the drive-up window and drive-up ATM will not be available at our Billerica branch. The branch will remain open during regular business hours, but the drive-up lanes will remain closed during construction.

How to Spot and Avoid Text Message Scams

Written by: James Cameron, Sr. Information Security Analyst

In an age of constant connectivity, test messages are a daily norm. But what do you do when a text feels off? Your immediate reaction could protect you from a scammer or lead you into a trap.

Text Scams Are Soaring

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) reports a shocking trend: $470 million lost to text-initiated scams in 2024. That's five times the amount reported in 2020, highlighting the growing financial risk of these deceptive messages.

How Scammers Reel You In

Text scams also known as Smishing typically follow a simple pattern:

  • They get your number: Scammers acquire your phone number from the Dark Web or by using auto-dialer tools that generate numbers.
  • They craft a deceptive message: Messages often create a sense of urgency, like "invoice overdue" or "account breached," to pressure you into reacting without thinking.
  • They wait for you to bite: Once the message is sent, they hope you'll fall for the bait.

Your Defense Toolkit: Prevention Tips

Protecting yourself is easier than you think:

  • Don't reply to unexpected texts: Take a moment to think, even if the message urges a quick response.
  • Never click links in unexpected messages: These links can install malware or lead to fake websites designed to steal your information.
  • Verify texts from known companies: If a text from a company seems legitimate, double-check by contacting them directly using contact information from their official website, not from the text.

Stop Unwanted Texts Before They Reach You

There are multiple ways to filter out unwanted texts:

  • On your phone: Most smartphones have built-in options to filter and block spam or messages from unknown senders.
  • Through your wireless provider: Your carrier may offer tools or services to block unwanted calls and texts. Check with your provider for details
  • With a call-blocking app: Explore reputable call-blocking apps available for your phone. Websites like ctia.org often list recommended apps.

Report Suspicious Texts

Your vigilance helps everyone. Here's what to do:

  • Forward spam messages to 7726 (SPAM): This helps your wireless provider identify and block similar messages.
  • Report scams in your messaging app: Both Apple iMessages and Google Messages for Android allow you to report potential scams.
  • Report to the FTC: File a report at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

If you've lost money to a scam, immediately contact the company that transferred the money to see if you can recover it, then report the scammer at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

By staying alert and taking these steps, you can significantly reduce your risk of becoming a text scam victim.
